Dear ISP Families
It has been a wonderful end to the school year, culminating in the Year 13 Graduation, The Awards Ceremonies, and finally the assembly today. As many of you embark on your well-deserved vacation, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the past twelve months and to also look ahead to the next academic year. It has been another very successful year with many events highlighted in our Year Book; I am also delighted at the successful way that the inaugural year of the Early Years Centre has operated. All of this success is predominantly due to the people who are connected with the school, including the teachers, the classroom assistants, the parents, the non-academic staff, the PTA, the Board of Governors, and the children; I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside such great people. Another nice ending to the year was to see the launch of our new website……and dare I mention my delight at witnessing the traffic lights working at the junction outside of school!
Teachers and Students Departing
A special ‘thank you and farewell’ goes to Ms Gretta, Ms Jillian, Mr Richard, Ms Rachel, Miss Stephanie, Mr Adam and Miss Laura. We also say au revoir to Ms Holly and Ms Sophie on a temporary basis as they will be taking a year of maternity leave. As always, it was very emotional in the final assembly today as we all said our goodbyes. All of these outstanding professionals have played a significant role in helping ISP to be in the strong position that it is today. I am extremely grateful for the contribution that each has made to ISP; sentiments which I am sure are supported by the whole ISP community. We wish them well in their future endeavours. We also had a number of students and families leaving us today, and we wish them every success for the future and hope that they leave with fond memories of their time at ISP. As is our tradition, we created a video as a farewell gift to our leavers, which I am sure you will enjoy watching.
Head Boy & Head Girl
I am extremely grateful to Athena and Keevan for leading the Student Council this year and for representing the student voice so well as our Head Boy and Head Girl respectively. Their successors were announced at the Awards Ceremony yesterday, and I am pleased to share with you that Nafisa and Russell will be our Head Girl and Head Boy respectively next year. We are confident that they will also do a sterling job in this high profile position.
IGCSE and A-Level Examinations
Our third cohort of IGCSE students, and second cohort of A-Level students, sat for their respective examinations in May/June 2017. Once again, the conduct of the students was exemplary throughout this period and Mr Simon, Mr James, Mr Scott, Ms Lorna, Mr Richard, Ms Patricia and all of the Secondary School teachers were very proud of our students. We eagerly await the results which will be issued in mid-August. We shall share the statistics of those results with the school community at the start of the next academic year.
Congratulations to Badak House who were crowned the overall House Champions for 2016-2017. The final standings being 1st Place – Badak (24,192 Points), 2nd Place – Penyu (24,035 points), 3rd Place – Harimau (23,750 points), 4th Place – Gajah (23,730 Points).
It has been a busy, productive and most enjoyable year in Creative Arts. The students continue to impress and surprise us, at all levels, with their creativity, skills and passion in both Art and Design & Technology. The A-Level Design & Technology students achieved top grades for their coursework component. The design folders and practical work were completed to an excellent standard. The Creative Arts Department ran ‘Dinosaur Challenge’, a very successful Key Stage 3 inter-house competition. It was exciting to capture the teams on video as they painted and built their dinosaur against the clock.
Students entered two external Art competitions this term. The first challenge was to design, develop and create a colourful poster that celebrates 60 years of partnership between Malaysia and the UK. Twenty students submitted designs for the MYUK Art competition and we are looking forward to the results. We have also submitted 25 entries for Round 1 of ‘Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artist Awards 2017’. Key stage 3 and 4 Students used their vivid imagination to design a car window sticker, based on a theme of their choice. This competition is run by The One Academy and I am delighted to share news that 9 of our students have been shortlisted for Round 2.
Towards the end of the term, Year 10 Art and D&T students visited The One Academy to learn more about courses and careers in a range of creative arts disciplines. They participated in calligraphy and clay animation workshops. This was a wonderful experience and we look forward to providing more educational visits in the year ahead.
It has been another busy term and as the sporting year comes to a close, once again I am a very proud Principal for the manner in which ISP students play their sport; they are truly great ambassadors for the school whenever and wherever they play.
There have been many success stories in the sporting arena throughout this year that deserve a special mention. This year was ISP’s first involvement in the FOBISIA games and our talented Primary team travelled to Phuket on their first tour in term 3. The students came back with many great memories of their achievements and endeavours to compliment the 6 trophies won. Our swimming touring team also travelled to Phuket this term to compete against some of the larger swimming teams in the region on their annual swimming tour with many individual medals awarded in several categories. There have also been swimming galas for years 1, 2 and 3.
The ISAC and KLISS leagues have continued to offer our students opportunities to experience inter-school competitions where many of our teams have performed to a great standard with some impressive results including:
- O15 Boys KLISS Volleyball Champions
- O15 Boys ISAC Volleyball 2ndPlace
- O15 Girls ISAC Volleyball 2ndplace
- U15 Boys KLISS Volleyball 2ndPlace
- U11 KLISS Badminton 2ndplace
- U15 KLISS Badminton 2ndplace
- U15 ISAC Badminton 3rdplace
- Secondary Swimming KLISS 2ndPlace
- Primary Swimming KLISS 2ndPlace
The dedication to sporting participation and performance from students and staff was evident from the annual Sports Awards Evening, where we were able to celebrate the magical year of sports at ISP. Every student who puts on the puma shirt and represents ISP with pride and passion needs acknowledging for the time and effort that they demonstrate and for contributing to the continued sporting reputation of the school. Congratulations to all of the team award winners including the most improved and most valuable members of each team. A particular special mention to all of the ‘Attitude is Everything’ award winners who have demonstrated the values that encompass being a team member at ISP including Marcus, Riona, Yan-Yi and Kristian. The ‘Teammate of the Year’ award winners were Ryushil and Vanessa who have shown great leadership qualities to motivate their respective teams. The ‘Team of the Year’ were awarded to the Under 9s Boys Benchball team for their dominating performances in Term 1 KLISS competitions and the Over 15s Girls Basketball team for their performances at the Phuket basketball tour and for bringing home the trophy and remaining undefeated in the KLISS tournament. I then was honoured to present the most prestigious sporting honour at ISP, the Sports Personality of the Year Award, which this year went to Grace (Primary) and Sean (Secondary) for demonstrating such a positive attitude in everything they did this year.
The sporting successes that ISP achieve would not be possible without the dedication from all of our team coaches and I would like to personally acknowledge the efforts of the PE team and the teachers who have provided numerous opportunities for ISP students to participate and progress their skills. I look forward to supporting the mighty pumas in another successful year where many new challenges await.
This was a fabulous year for our Performing Arts Department as had two big productions of “The Grunch” (Primary) and “Arabian Nights” (Secondary). In addition, Years 1 & 2 had their opportunity to shine with their “KS1 at The Movies”. All of the above were the outcome of exceptional teamwork amongst the Performing Arts teachers.
Our ensembles keep growing every year and we are happy to involve more students across the school in fabulous assemblies and special events. Our major purpose is to promote and motivate students to achieve their maximum potential at any level. We offer, Primary Orchestra, Secondary Orchestra, Primary Strings, Intermediate Chamber Group, Advanced Chamber Group, Primary Choir, Secondary Choir, Chamber Choir, Saxophone Club, Flute Club, and Trumpets Club and Drama Club. We have also participated in several FOBISIA and AIMS events, including the AIMS Young Musician Awards, the AIMS Primary Orchestra Festival, FOBISIA Drama workshops, and the FOBISIA online project of “Free as a Bird”. We had our annual Instrumental Recital, Primary and Secondary Performing Arts Assemblies, whole school Performing Arts Assemblies, IGCSE Drama and Music recitals, BBT concerts, ISP Has Talent, workshops and several trips for dance, music and drama.
We firmly believe that student involvement in the Arts helps to improve their academic achievement, confidence, self-expression, problem solving, perseverance, empathy and compassion in addition to giving them memories that they can treasure for the rest of their lives. We are very excited about the next academic, especially after the announcement that the Secondary School will perform the exhilarating musical of ‘Grease’.
The International Schools Quality Mark (ISQM) Accreditation
The ISQM Accreditation process continues to go very well. The final inspection will be on 9th – 12th October 2017. We will share more news on this extremely important visit in early September.
The New Block
When we return in September, we will have full use of the facilities in the new block, including the swimming pool, the Sports Hall, and several purpose-built classrooms for Mathematics, Science and English.
Upgrading of Facilities
During the vacation, there will be lots of work taking place around the school; all for the benefit of the children and their learning. This includes (i) Retractable seating in the MPH, (ii) The fitting of a new stage in the MPH, (iii) Installation of a new WIFI system across the whole school, (iv) Fit-out of the classrooms in the new block, (v) Painting of the complete school. When the children return in September, it will be like returning to a completely new school.
Teachers for 2017-2018
We shall welcome fifteen new teachers into the school in August 2017. Recruitment of high quality teachers is becoming increasingly competitive as more international schools are opening not only in Malaysia but also globally. I am therefore extremely pleased with the quality of teachers who are joining us. As always, a photograph and brief details on each of them are available on the school website for your perusal at http://isp.edu.my/about-us/our-staff/
Calendar for 2017-2018
The Calendar for 2017-2018 is available on the school website. Please be aware that some of the Public Holidays are subject to change, which we shall duly keep you informed of.
Purchase of School Uniform
ISP Uniform Shop is open between 8.00am – 3.30pm (Monday to Friday) to purchase uniforms as the stocks available at the moment and also for those students moving from reception to Yr1. This is to avoid the long queue during the start of term.
Start Date for Term 1 of the 2017-2018 Academic Year
A reminder that the first day of the next academic year will be Monday 4th September 2017.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all ISP families for your continued support and for having the confidence to entrust your child’s education in us. I wish everyone a prosperous and enjoyable vacation and I look forward to working with you throughout the next academic year as we continue to establish positive relationships to promote the development of every child at ISP.
