The Primary School
A vibrant and cheerful welcome awaits all students.
The Primary School is a welcoming and vibrant environment in which all students are encouraged to reach their full potential. Our curriculum is carefully designed to promote high standards, whilst ensuring a love of learning and enjoyment of school. The Primary School caters for children from ages 3 to 11 years old and is divided into the following sections:
The Early Years Centre – Ages 3 to 5 years
The Early Years form part of the Primary School at The International School @ ParkCity (ISP) catering for students between 3 and 5 years of age. The Early Years was formerly located at the ISP main site, but a new, purpose built Early Years Centre (EYC) was opened in September 2016.
Located next to the Desa ParkCity Club, the EYC is a beautiful, age appropriate facility providing bright, open-plan indoor spaces and a safe, green outside environment in which the children can learn, play and grow.
More information can be found on the EYC page.
Key Stage 1 – Ages 5 to 7 years
Children in Key Stage 1 follow the National Curriculum for England in Mathematics and English and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
In Key Stage 1 we build on the foundations of the EYFS encouraging the children to become confident in their developing abilities. The children are provided with rich learning opportunities intended to foster a sense of curiosity and enjoyment and there is also a focus on social and emotional development. At this stage there is a focus on the children’s literacy development; their increasing understanding of phonics leads to progression in their fluency of reading and writing. Similarly there is a focus on the acquisition of mathematical skills and understanding.
The IPC units are carefully structured to engage our children and all begin with an exciting ‘Wow Day’. These Wow Days act as a hook, stimulating the children’s interest and igniting a passion for learning.
Teaching strategies are personalised to address the needs of our children and they are also encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively. All children in Key Stage 1 also have specialist lessons in subjects such as Physical Education (PE), Swimming, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and Performing Arts.
Key Stage 2 – Ages 7 to 11 years
Children in Key Stage 2 follow the National Curriculum for England in Mathematics and English and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
Key Stage 2 spans four years and is a carefully planned phase that seamlessly transitions children from Key Stage 1 and fully prepares them for their Secondary education. As with Key Stage 1, the children are taught through carefully planned IPC units and there is a continuing focus on competency in English and Mathematics. A subtle shift in the emphasis on reading at this stage moves from a focus on the children ‘learning to read’, to them ‘reading to learn’.
Our stimulating and exciting curriculum aims to promote a love of learning amongst the children. This phase in their development is characterised by increasing independence and the children become more reflective learners. There are also many opportunities for children to develop socially and emotionally with great emphasis placed on collaboration and cooperation. All children in Key Stage 2 have specialist lessons in subjects such as Physical Education (PE), Swimming, Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and Performing Arts.
An exciting feature of Key Stage 2 is that the children participate in developmentally appropriate residential programmes designed to enrich our curriculum. The experience of being away from home and ‘pulling together’ means that children develop stronger peer relationships and grow in resilience and independence.
